LOSANGELES—Museums, entrepreneurs, chefs, students and government leaders are in preparations for Los Angeles’s inaugural ChinaWeek, a series of events held May 7th-14th throughout Los Angeles County dedicated to catalyzing and highlighting Southern California’s unique role as the go-to gateway for advancing U.S.-China ties.

ChinaWeek programming will include the California-China Business Summit, the U.S.-China Cleantech Innovation Forum, art exhibitions at The Getty and the USC Pacific Asia Museum, dim sum food tours of the San Gabriel Valley, and “Chinese &Friends Speed Dating” events, to name just a few.

Governor Jerry Brown will deliver the keynote remarks at the California-China Business Summit on May 11th. The summit, a center piece of ChinaWeek, is derived from a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between California and China’s Ministry of Commerce, which implements the consensus reached between Governor Brown and then-Vice President Xi Jinping to expand trade and investment cooperation.

The MOU links California to some of China’s most economically advanced regions (Guangdong,Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei, Shanghai, Chongqing and Inner Mongolia) and provides a framework to boost economic growth, strengthen communication and enhance trust between China and California. The summit will host a significant Chinese delegation composed of business and government leaders from various Chinese regions, who will both deliberate on immediate business opportunities and create an ongoing platform to carry out the mission of the MOU.

“Chinese investments are already reshaping everything from the Los Angeles skyline to Hollywood blockbusters,” said Peter Shiao, Chairman and co-founder of ChinaWeek and CEO of Orb Media Group. “Chinese companies have invested over $12 billion in over 350 California businesses, and Chinese cargo totals 60% of international trade activity in Los Angeles County, making China the county’s leading international trade partner.

“With our strong institutions, Chinese American community, dynamic entertainment industry and diverse lifestyles, the Los Angeles region is simply the most important region in a new era of US-China relations—an era when people-to-people,business-to-business and artist-to-artist exchanges are pushing boundaries daily between the two countries,” added Shiao.

“We created ChinaWeek specifically to reflect and expand on this reality— and to offer both Americans and Chinese a chance to engage with each other in an unprecedented way throughout the region. The time is now ripe for the entire region to come together to take a coordinated approach to engaging China for the maximal benefit of all, and with ChinaWeek we are taking the first step to bring all the parties together to do just that.”

In addition to Governor Brown will deliver a keynote on the summit, the event will include presentations by the delegations from seven Chinese provinces, as well as representatives from U.S. businesses and industry groups.
